Lessons from The Fog of War: discussion w/ Robert McNamara

The Fog of War was a brilliant film that lacked a crucial element: a discussion of its meaning in the context of contemporary events, especially the current war in Iraq. This discussion - recorded last year at the University of California at Berkeley (and somehow overlooked) - is The Fog of War's missing link to the sad reality of America's geo-political position today. From the bombshell dropped by Robert McNamara at the beginning of the discussion to the withering attempts by Mark Danner to force McNamara into open criticism of the Bush administration, this video is extraordinarily insightful, simulataneously hopeful and fatalistic, and often heart-stoppingly intense. Robert McNamara comes across as an amazingly complex yet passionate man with an important message to be understood, debated and acted upon. For those of us who consider ourselves somewhat politically astute, this discussion is an absolute must-see.

The video starts with a long and extremely boring speech by some guy talking about how great berkeley is in free speech. The debaters in the video barely listen to eachother. McNamara is mostly interested in talking about his film and his own experiences. He is obviously getting old and (same as the other participants) he seems not knowing really why they are doing what they are doing and what they want to say. All in all it was a wast of my time, no new information gained and no real discussion seen, unfortunately it was a pretty boring show...

Maybe Soy was having a bad day cuz the speech was anything but boring - the guy spoke of another discussion (a good & contentious one) between McNamara and an old Vietnam hawk that was done at the U. of Texas (& which I'm trying to find now). McNamara is now 87 years old - ever think what could compel such an old man to do a movie, write books and do discussions & debates? The Fog of War was a brilliant movie, Morris won a best director Oscar for it, and here's a rare opportunity to see them discussing it in the context of the current war in Iraq. Soy, you blew it, I think. I'm not sure what your idea of entertainment is. I certainly hope it's not video games.

Yea I liked this one. McNamara is a cool old man, love to see some of that "Shut up for a sec and listen to someone more experienced than you" attitude Smile I love how he constantly got them "offtopic", or should I say BACK on topic.
