Correspondent - The Yemen Option Sitting strategically at the crossroads of the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, the country of Yemen is considered one of the most exotic places in the region. However, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden also has a reputation for being a dangerous haven for Al Qaeda terrorists. But all that appeared to change after Sept. 11, when the Yemeni government became a reluctant recruit in Americas war on terror. In The Yemen Option, Australian journalist Mark Corcoran explains how this Muslim nation seems to have found a middle path between satisfying Washingtons demand to seek out and destroy Al Qaeda, and placating the views of many Yemenis sympathetic to their ideals. After the overthrow of Afghanistans Taliban regime in 2001, there were fears that Osama bin Laden would transform Yemen into his new base. More importantly, large sections of the country were outside the effective control of the government, ruled by heavily armed tribes sympathetic to Islamic extremists. For more than three years, a deadly yet largely unreported struggle has played out across the country. But along with the killing there is also a unique compromise - the Yemen Option. In this documentary, Corcoran meets a captured member of Al Qaeda, a star recruit in the governments controversial rehabilitation program to release Al Qaeda members who renounce the movement. The government is also attempting to deny terrorists the tools of their deadly trade by buying back weapons on the black market, no questions asked. Corcoran and his crew also inspect what was, until their visit, a secret government warehouse crammed with tonnes of rockets, anti-aircraft missiles and plastic explosives. Edmund Hull, then the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, said he worries the government could be creating a new weapons market, with tribesmen encouraged to import more weapons into a country already awash with arms. Despite these concerns, the Yemen Option appears to be working. More than two years have passed since the last major attack by Al Qaeda in Yemen - an extraordinary turnaround.
