In Defense of Academic Freedom (University of Chicago, 2007-10-12)

Hey all,

This is a conference that was held in support of Norman Finkelstein when he was denied tenure at De Paul university (Chicago) in early 2007 for his opinions (in private, not in teaching, nota bene) about the Israel-Palestine conflict. It features nine speakers (see below for list) and a question and answer period.

This conference is a unique gathering of people with different, sometimes opposing opinions. On one hand, among the nine academics there are "hard-leftists like Noam Chomsky" (quoting Alan Dershowitz), while on the other hand some of the participants are in favour of Israel's current policies and have publicly criticized Finkelstein for his "anti-semitic" views. All of which only makes it an even more amazing display of academic solidarity.

Presentations of the speakers are found here:
http://www.academicfreedomchicago.org/
(The files can all be found here if you prefer to view them streaming.)

List of speakers:
01 - Tariq Ali, Editor of the New Left Review and Verso Books
02 - Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus), MIT
03 - Dr. Akeel Bilgrami, Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy and Director of The Heyman Center, Columbia
04 -Tony Judt, University Professor and Director of the Remarque Institute, New York University
05 - John Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science, University of Chicago
(06 - Question and Answer period)
07 - Evan Lorendo, Academic Freedom Committee, DePaul University
08 - Mehrene Larudee, International Studies Program, DePaul University
09 - Neve Gordon, Professor, Department of Politics and Government, Ben-Gurion University
10 - Norman Finkelstein, author and historian

Although the personal conflicts are not as interesting as the conference, I'll post a little reflection on that too. Many believe Alan Dershowit exerted influence over De Paul univerity's decision to deny tenure to Finkelstein, one of their most popular teachers among the students. Dershowitz' antipathy may originate in a 2003 Democracy now! debate where Finkelstein systematically proved Dershowitz' book to be fraudulent:
http://www.democracynow.org/2003/9/24/scholar_norman_finkelstein_calls_professor_alan

Dershowitz has admitted to sending De Paul a letter:
http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=518002

But in Dershowitz' defence, on his website he says "The final part of Mr. Finkelstein's quest for tenure is to blame his tenure problems on "outsiders." He claims that I intruded myself into the DePaul review process, neglecting to mention that I was specifically asked by the former chairman of DePaul's political science department to "point [him] to the clearest and most egregious instances of dishonesty on Finkelstein's part." I responded by providing hard evidence of made-up quotes and facts -- a pattern that should alone disqualify him from tenure.

You be the judge. But I strongly recommend watching the Democracy now! debate first.

Not unbreakable...
You can convert .flv using

SUPER video convertor
http://english.p30world.com/archives/001369.php

Or Nero Showtime (pm me if you can't find it)

Or split the audio/video of the .flv using "FLV extract" and then use a conventional convertor:

Oh and don't forget that Dershowitz accused Finkelstein's mother (a concentration camp survivor) of being a Nazi collaborator (read officers' whore).
And all because Finkelstein assisted in proving Dershowitz guilty of plagiarism and propagating lies in defense of Israel.
