Emma Goldman: "An exceedingly dangerous woman"
On a cold December morning in 1919, just after midnight, Emma Goldman, her comrade Alexander Berkman, and more than 200 other foreign-born radicals were roused from their Ellis Island dormitory beds to begin their journey out of the United States for good. Convicted of obstructing the draft during World War I, Goldman's expatriation came 34 years after she had fist set foot in New York- a young, brilliant, Russian immigrant. For more than three decades, she had taunted mainstream America with her outspoken attacks on government, big business and war. As this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE production shows, Goldman's passionate espousal for Leon Czolgosz, the assassin who killed President McKinley, brought down upon her the hatred of the authorities and the public at large. Feared as a sponser of anarchy and revolution, she was vilified in the press as "Red Emma, " "Queen of the Anarchists," and "the most dangerous woman in America."

Its amazing that a corporate show would do a doc on this fabulous woman, and call her American, thats funny. But to have a doc about emma and not have howard zinn in it is just wrong. It is a good doc if one can get past all the slandering. One lady calls berkman a suicide bomber for his attempted assassination of frick, and another person calls anarchy a nieve political theory. if you want to know about emma listen to howard zinn for the easy way or if you really want to know about her read Living My Life.

While I haven't watched the documentary, I second RevoltNow's recommendation of Living My Life but I want to add "The ABC of Anarchism" by Alexander Berkman, or his prison memoirs, Berkman was a BRILLIANT writer regardless of his political views.

After viewing this documentary, I have to whole-heartedly agree with RevoltNow's assessment of the film. It is extremely one-sided and often quite derogatory towards Goldman. I feel as though these people have not read her diaries, her writings, but rather think they "know" her and what she's "about." I cannot in good conscience recommend this film.

Previous comments on this film (from here and Karagarga)
"although I don't like its form or style, which is typically PBS, I am happy it exists simply because it is so rare to see anything about anarchists on film and Emma G. was such an inspirational figure.
Two things which I do object to though are the failure to contextualize the relationship with the IWW union, which was the mass libertarian movement at the time, and also the total neglect of her life after the death of Berkman.
It is ironic that a film describing an anarcho-feminist decides elected to erase the last twelve years of her life after the death of Alexander Berkman. Apparently, her soul-mate having shot himself, there is nothing left for her to do but die. As it happens this is factually wrong. Amongst other things Goldman was around to see anarchism in another fight, the social revolution in Spainof 1936, which she worked for and supported from London, organising propoaganda as well as arms shipments to the CNT-FAI anarchist militias."
"the live of a radical thru the eyes of the little US-liberals... they entirely skipped the last 20 years of her live as an activist, including her time as a representative of the spanish anarchist trade union during the civil war. the film also claims that emma (ceased) to "believe in socialism" after her visit to bolshevik russia and her meeting with lenin. which is of course outright nonsense."
It's good to see that people are capable of distinguishing the discrepancies and lies by omission contained within this documentary..
Of course when the film is sponsored by three or four "pro- America" organisations then naturally a certain ammount of integrity is sold.
For my part, I agree with the first comment; any Emma Goldman is better than no Emma Goldman.
