CBC Special - Wal-Town: The Film (2005) [PDTV]~Ekolb

499 MiB /1h 6mn 8s 376ms

A group of six university students, calling themselves Wal-Town, take to the Canadian highway over two summers. Armed with thousands of pamphlets, flyers, and with one freelance journalist in tow, they visit 36 of Canada's more than 200 Wal-Mart stores with one formidable goal: to raise public awareness about Wal-Mart's business practices and the effects of the company's policies on cities and towns across Canada. Interspersing frank exchanges between activists and Wal-Mart shoppers with interviews with a range of characters from either side of the issue, the film raises challenging questions about the impact of big business on the culture of communities.

Looks good but I've been following this for some time. Case in point: Stacey Mitchell, author of "The Big Box Swindle" has new articles on the effort of Walmart and regional malls to brand themselves using local washing. Local washing is giving a small part of your produce over to local vendors and telling customers to support their 'local' Walmart or shopping mall.

There is another trend in which Starbucks has re-branded their franchise not mentioning Starbucks except on a small name plate on the door to grab the local market.

Also a feature cover story in Progressive Populist.
