TVO Allan Gregg in Conversation, March 19, 2010: Chris Hedges on 'Empire of Illusion'

A quote by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges opens this year's Oscar-winning film, The Hurt Locker -- "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug." It's from his bestseller War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. In his latest book, Empire of Illusion, Hedges laments the rise of a culture that craves fantasy and illusion, too distracted to confront society's real problems.

I have read "Empire of Illusion" and heard Hedges talk on Flashpoints from KPFA-- a daily news hour from Berkeley CA. I get this half hour torrent. But from previous TVO talks I have listened to, they tend to be pretty blanks. The word "blather" always comes to mind in relation to this Canadian show.

Heard it and recommend it. Hedges goes through many of the points in the book very smoothly and articulately.

For me the Empire of Illusion based on tv has a simple answer that few really comprehend. Even when I talk to people that seem sane enough and on the right side of issues, they still "have to have their NPR (CNN other mass news outlet)" in the same way that the phrase used to be used about MTV. They feel that they will be cut off from "being in the know" which is an infantile attempt at a narcissistic control of the world. NPR, CNN, PBS etc feed that illusion while the real business goes on at a different level altogether.

Definitely read "Empire of Illusion." But the place I've gone from there is to a book by Benjamin R. Barber called "Consumed: How markets corrupt children, infantilize adults and swallow citizens whole."

Just the title alone has some evidence here on a thread about President Obama and his apologists. It combines the elements of the illusion that "the president is doing the best the can" with infantile celebrity worship.

Barber's book is from 2007 before the current Democratic administration started. Hedges explores the world of Obama worship very well.
