How Nonviolence Protects The State
Peter Gelderloos
2007
South End Press
ISBN: 978-0896087729
People working for social change face plenty of difficult questions, but sometimes matters of strategy and tactics receive low priority. Among many North American activists, the role of nonviolence as the default mode of struggle bears little scrutiny. Is nonviolence effective at ending systems of oppression? How is nonviolence connected to white privilege? Is militancy naturally macho, or does pacifism reinforce the same power dynamics as patriarchy? Ultimately, does nonviolence protect the State? How Nonviolence Protects the State brings existing criticisms of nonviolence, and several new ones, together into one book, in an attempt to illuminate one of the most severe roadblocks to social change today. Now in a new, revised, expanded and updated edition.

violence protects the state, also.

Paraphrasing Howard Zinn (quote I just recently saw)
'What is worse? Civil Disobedience or no Civil Disobedience?'
I don't talk too smart though because I have never been arrested or beaten on the protest line.
It's an important topic. What is the connection mentioned above between non-violence and white privilege?

Better question: What is the connection between non-white lack of privilege and violence as a solution?
The people I have met that advocate this book usually are white privileged anarchos. Furthermore, the same people joke about MLK, Gandhi, etc without actually having read or studied anything by them other than, ironically, what they have been spoon-fed by the statist/capitalist mass-media.
This is book is a crutch for the lazy thinkers in the anarcho movement that don't want to bother doing the hard work of Struggle (which requires a broad array of tactics and strategies) and prefers the tired failed tactics of macho gang-ism of the Black Bloc.

I've been getting a lot of traffic on the Adam Curtis torrent called "The Living Dead." I wondered why this one was getting hits and rewatched some of it again. The Living Dead documents how memories of the Nazi regime have been repressed by the Germans and, using the Freudian term, the Return of the Repressed manifested itself as Red Brigade/Baader Meinhoff. That's just the first part. The Last segment is about Margaret Thatcher. Don't worry, it all comes together but Curtis' work is dense and needs repeated viewing.

redjade, your comment is a pile of bullshit and strawman ad hominem anecdotes totally unconnected to any real experience of the movement. And you clearly haven't actually read Gelderloos' text:

Why don't you engage with what the actual text says as opposed to whatever you think it says. (Gelderloos argues for precisely what you counterpose.) And as to the black bloc...

Well I go from town to town
Just me and my guitar
You can see me at all the protests
Up on stage I'm such a star
But when the cops start charging
You can find me at the back
I'll be keeping safe my fingers
While all you kids' skulls get cracked
And afterwards I'll write songs poking fun at your whole crew
I'm a better folk singer than you
All this time spent traveling
It gets lonesome on the road
And you know I can't stand these rockstars
But I've got these seeds to sow
Why should I consider the power and privilege I possess
Baby when I get nervous up on stage, how 'bout I picture you undressed?
Save your talk of patriarchy, I'll go out and screw
I'm a better folk singer than you
And why eat dumpstered food that at Whole Foods could be bought?
And why wear patched up clothing when there's new clothes from sweatshops?
Your cultures of resistance are just silly and passe
Unless, of course, those cultures support gigs for me to play
Trite exaggerations of anarchists are cool
I'm a better folk singer than you

no ish sherlock , violence protects the state because violence is the main tool of the state the corporation and the religions. what we are talking about here is resistance to that via property destruction. ..
